Yes, this boat car is indeed street legal and it’s almost gotten people in accidents as they’ve tried to photograph and videotape it driving by. The car, which was built by Atlanta resident Mark Ray, took only a year to build and it was created on a bet from his cancer-stricken wife Robyn.
According to Mark, she came into the bedroom one day and said, “Why don’t you build a boat car?” It was a strange request, but Mark decided to go for it, especially when she told him that she bet he couldn’t do it. Then the challenge was on.
After some research, Mark acquired a free stripped-down Sea Ray Bow Rider boat and placed it on top of a cut apart GMC Jimmy. It took him $10K to create. The car still has its original engine (4.3-liter V-6) and includes features like head- and taillights, mirrors and seatbelts, which were required to make it street legal.
Other features were thrown in for fun, like a propeller and fishing rod holders. Mark added fake door handles too, after getting tired of being asked how he gets in the vehicle (which is by a ladder in the back).
Mark says the boat car stops traffic everywhere he goes and that he’s been offered money for it, but refuses to sell. Instead, he plans on passing it down to his kids.
