For drivers who were disappointed when General Motors discontinued the Hummer brand six years ago, there may be some good news in store. Several sources say GM is thinking about bringing a new off-road, military-inspired SUV into the GMC family and it could pick up where the HX Concept was left off before the Hummer brand was chopped.

GM has been talking with dealerships to gain information about customer demand and market viability. While the new GMC model hasn't been given the thumbs up, experts say that the proposed SUV would compete in the same class as the Jeep Wrangler, which has no direct rival now that the FJ Cruiser has been axed from Toyota's lineup. This opens up an opportunity for GM to provide a new option for consumers in need of a tough off-roader with a removable top.

If the new SUV does go into production, sources told WSJ that it'll "borrow cues and capability" from the Hummer brand, and after just taking a quick look at it, the 2008 Hummer HX Concept seems like the specific model that the new SUV might borrow from. It had a two-door layout with a detachable roof and was said to look like "a Wrangler on steroids" by Fox News.

It's also clear that GM thinks there's a strong demand for this type of vehicle and in regard to how close the company is to giving the project a green light, WSJ was told: "The idea is being kicked around real hard."
