GMC Introduces Revolutionary CrabWalk Technology for Enhanced Maneuverability in Electric Trucks

GMC has long been a trailblazer in the auto industry by integrating innovative technology into its vehicles. Automakers are rolling out a revolutionary feature for several EV models called “CrabWalk.” This capability, available on the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 as well as on both the Hummer EV pickup and SUV, enables drivers to shift their trucks sideways to steer clear of obstacles and tricky spots on the road or trail. With this advancement, GMC elevates the challenge of tackling obstacles and varied terrain.

What is CrabWalk?

CrabWalk is an inventive new feature introduced by GMC for the Hummer EV and the Sierra EV. In both vehicles, the system functions in the same way. CrabWalk allows the rear wheels to turn in unison with the front wheels. Both sets of wheels rotate at the same angle—up to 10 degrees to the right or left. This technology is designed for slow speeds of up to 20 MPH, making it perfect for navigating challenging trail conditions, dodging roadway obstructions, and even aiding in parking.

How Does CrabWalk Work?

Essentially, drivers need to bring their vehicle to a complete stop or slow it down to just over one MPH while keeping the steering wheel centered. Then, they can press a “4-Wheel Steer” button on the Hummer EV for four seconds to engage CrabWalk. Sierra EV drivers can simply access the infotainment screen, select the “Controls” app, tap “Rear Steering,” and choose the CrabWalk feature. Once activated in either model, the vehicle will begin to move diagonally.

It's important for drivers to note that certain functions and features become inactive when CrabWalk is in use. For example, the vehicle must be stationary or moving slowly to initiate CrabWalk, the steering wheel must remain completely still, and Super Cruise technology should not be active. Additionally, some advanced safety aids like lane-keep assist are disabled during CrabWalk, which is why it's only available at lower speeds. Once activated, CrabWalk can be used up to 20 MPH; surpassing that speed will cause the front and rear wheels to stop turning at the same angle.

After reaching the desired position, drivers can turn off CrabWalk using the same method they used to activate it.
