About Courtney's Place
Every person's day should be full of meaning. To have meaning, all people need a purpose. Courtney's Place strives to provide purpose for an exceptional group of adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Despite these obstacles in their lives, Courtney's Place is a family-founded non-profit organization that knows it's possible to create meaningful and fulfilling experiences for adults with intellectual disabilities. They've done this by crafting a day program that fills participants' lives with things they can do. It focuses on their strengths, never their weaknesses.
The Mission of Courtney's Place
Courtney's Place began its journey at the center of a single-family. In 1985, Courtney was born to Cindy and Jim Carpenter. Because of complications at birth, Courtney endured life-threatening conditions that nearly took her life in her first weeks. She survived. However, she was left with permanent nervous system disorders and other disorders that left her unable to speak or care for herself.
It's here that her namesake - Courtney's Place - begins. Within the roots of this tragedy, triumph was born. Jim and Cindy wanted to help people just like their daughter finds meaning in life. The best way to find meaning is to give adults with these conditions tasks they can do. By focusing on abilities instead of disabilities, these adults can find meaning in everyday life and continue learning. Day programs are often the only way for these adults to develop a schedule and a sense of purpose.
Day programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities weren't very inclusive and high quality. Jim and Cindy learned that they wanted their daughter to have a place where she could thrive in life during the days, something to fill her days. When they found these things lacking, they decided that the best way to get something perfect for their daughter was to create it themselves. They founded a day program in 2007, and since then, they've been helping people just like Courtney with a wonderful day program at Courtney's Place. All year-round, they're focusing on the lives of up to 42 individuals that participate in their day program. This small program size allows them to focus on each person to make the program more satisfying.
